Camp Program Director
Jen (camp name: Frazzle) has been a Girl Scout since 1980 and began her career at camp at the age of 16. She started working at resident camp during the summers, holding various roles from kitchen assistant to counselor and trip specialist to assistant camp director.
In 2002, she became the director at Camp Singing Hills, serving in that role through 2008. She then served as camp director for Camp Northwoods in 2009, and has been the camp director at Camp Elk River since 2010. In the non-camp season, Jen plans and manages camp operations, ensuring our camps are safe, fun, and appropriate to the campers’ ages and abilities.
She loves witnessing the countless moments where girls challenging themselves to try new things and gain confidence in themselves. She hopes that at camp, every camper and staff member learns more about who they are and their ability to trust in their decision-making skills, and that they take with them the love of being outdoors.
Camp Program Coordinator and Director of Camp Northwoods
Shannon (camp name: Shannanigans) grew up in the Twin Cities area and has been a Girl Scout since the first grade. Shannon started working at Girl Scout River Valleys camps in 2009 as a seasonal staff member. She loved it so much that she never wanted to leave – so she didn’t! Over the years she has worked on many different programs from classic camp, to horses, to beginner wilderness trips. She has also worked at each of Girl Scouts River Valleys camps in some capacity along the way.
During the school year, Shannon plans and leads all outdoor program events at our camp facilities such as, Girl Scout Way Day, Winter Wonderland, Brrring it on!, and archery.
Shannanigans loves camp because of the atmosphere of friendship and adventure it creates for everyone who visits. Whether you are a Girl Scout Brownie, Ambassador, or an adult, there is always an opportunity for you to learn new skills, make new friends, and grow in confidence while at camp.
Program Manager of STEM & Evaluation Program and Director of Camp Lakamaga
Hannah (camp name: Gilly) has spent most of her young adult and adult summers at camp. In her five+ years working at various camps, Hannah has led curriculum development, counselor training, and groups of campers ranging from pre-schoolers to high-schoolers! She’s developed and implemented several outdoor STEM camps, getting youth excited to try rocketry, engineering, and biology while they do classic camp activities like archery and fire-building. When she’s not the Summer Camp Director for Camp Lakamaga, Hannah is Girl Scouts River Valley’s STEM Program Manager.
Her favorite thing about camp is the opportunity to bond through shared new experiences. Whether it’s sailing your first boat, making your first fire-cooked meal, or leading your first song—the best part is doing it together. While Hannah loves working with girls of all ages and experience-levels (because girls are awesome), she especially loves working with girls who are new to summer camp.
Program Coordinator and Camp Director of Camp Edith Mayo and Camp Singing Hills
Lauren (camp name: Bubbles) has spent every summer since the second grade attending or working at a Girl Scout Camp. She went from attending as a camper to volunteering as a Counselor-in-Training to working as a Counselor and Assistant Camp Director. Her first two years with Girl Scouts River Valleys, she worked at Camp Elk River and at Camp Singing Hills as Assistant Camp Director. She is now ready to take on the role of Camp Director of Edith Mayo and Camp Singing Hills this summer.
During the non-camp season Lauren manages, develops, and implements programming out of Edith Mayo and Southern Minnesota.
Her favorite camp activities include kayaking, outdoor cooking, and archery. She loves camp, because of the growth in confidence and character she sees in each girl who attends camp, whether the girl attends camp for one day or three weeks.
Seasonal Camp Director of Camp Elk River
Barbara (camp name: Ziwa) joined Girl Scouts as a Daisy and has been going to camp just as long. In 2014, she became part of the summer staff at Camp Elk River as a Counselor and has come back every year since as a Specialist, Waterfront Director, and most recently as Associate Camp Director.
When she isn’t at camp, Barbara studies Health Education, but you can probably still find her out and about River Valleys assisting with all sorts of programs.
Her favorite thing about camp is seeing girls’ excitement when they are taking on a new challenge, whether it’s kayaking, sleeping in a tent, or riding a horse for the first time. She loves watching girls build confidence and gain independence throughout their time at camp.
